In sanctuary Boston, politics before public safety

Imagine for a moment you’re a small business owner in Boston. Maybe you have a small restaurant, one where you sometimes can’t even pay yourself because you’re trying to cover your payroll, your rent and — of course — your taxes. Every so often, a government health inspector shows up with a clipboard and a ticket pad. Oops — you’ve got some lids on your food tubs that aren’t quite closed up. Is that vent over the grill really clean enough?


You collect your tickets and — despite the fact that you’re trying to run a good business — you pay them. Why? Because if you don’t, Mayor Marty Walsh and his enforcers will shut your business and not think twice.


Now, imagine you’re that guy, listening to Mayor Marty announce that, in his city, lawbreakers are welcome.


That’s the “sanctuary city” story in a nutshell. People who play by the rules and cops who uphold the rules being told, “Sorry. For these very special people, the rules just don’t apply.”The Boston Herald reported Monday on Mayor Marty’s decision to “double down on his support for sanctuary status” after the head of New England ICE all but begged politicians to stop putting politics before public safety.
