Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday that the House will not vote to authorize a formal impeachment inquiry for now—a move that might give Republicans more ammo in refusing to cooperate with Democrats’ investigation.
The White House has called House Democrats’ impeachment investigation illegitimate because the full House never held a formal vote to start one.A formal vote would have caused each member to go on the record with their stance on impeachment, which could impact vulnerable Democrats in swing districts.In defending the decision, Pelosi said that a formal vote to start an inquiry isn’t mentioned in the Constitution, though past impeachment inquiries have begun with a formal vote on the House floor.
