New Jersey's gas tax is going up this fall for the second time in two years. And all indications are that it is going to keep going up, an industry expert says.

Gas tax collections have fallen behind for two years now, precipitating Gov. Phil Murphy 's administration to announce Thursday that it is raising the motor fuel tax 4.3 cents, bringing state taxes on a gallon of gasoline sold in New Jersey to 41.4 cents -- the ninth-highest of any state.
This follows a whopping 23-cent-per-gallon increase passed by the state Legislature and signed into law by then-Gov. Chris Christie in 2016.
An industry expert says New Jersey is caught in a loop wherein higher gas taxes are depressing consumption, which then forces state officials to levy fresh gas taxes each fall. Read more
