President Donald Trump said Friday that he will likely declare a national emergency to build his wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a step that would do an end-around on congressional Democrats who have blocked funding for the project.
"I think there's a good chance we will have to do that," the president said of a national emergency declaration.
Trump last week signed a three-week continuing resolution to end a partial government shutdown that had become the longest in U.S. history. In agreeing to the deal, Trump called on Republicans and Democrats to come up with an agreement that will include funding for a border wall.
But thus far, Democrats have mostly refused to budge on appropriating money for the president's signature campaign promise, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declaring this week that any deal will not include a border wall. Trump has demanded $5.7 billion in funding for his border wall and has signaled that he will reject any deal that does not include the funds.
