More than 200 students, faculty and staff gathered at Northeastern Illinois University on Thursday night loudly protesting Sean Spicer, who had been invited to the university to speak with Donna Brazile about the 2020 election.
Northeastern Illinois University, which has a majority minority student body, held the event despite an earlier petition to withdraw the invitation to Spicer circulated and amassed over 250 signatures.
The event was mostly peaceful until about 8 p.m., when one man jumped on the stage. The man was “immediately detained by security,” said John Escalante, chief of police for the university. Escalante briefly served as interim Chicago police superintendent.
Brett Stockdill, a Northeastern professor of sociology, said the man who jumped on the stage was not involved in the organized protest. It was not immediately clear what charges, if any, the man would face. Read more
